IGLTA Foundation & UN Tourism explore the Impact of LGBTQ+ Tourism and Travel on Destinations
The Affiliate Member INTERNATIONAL GAY & LESBIAN TRAVEL ASSOCIATION (IGLTA), in collaboration with UN Tourism, organized a webinar focused on the "Impact of LGBTQ+ Tourism and Travel on Destinations" on September 12.
Did you know that if the LGBTQ+ community were a country, their global spending power would rank 3rd globally?

The economic impact of LGBTQ+ tourism and travel is significant. According to IGLTA:
- US$218 billion Global LGBTQ+ travel spend
- US$600 billion Total LGBTQ+ travel spend estimate by 2030
Destinations around the world are adapting to welcome LGBTQ+ Tourists based on their unique profiles.
This is the case of Visit Benidorm (Ayuntamiento de Benidorm), a small city in Spain that recorded a significant positive impact on tourism thanks to LGBTQ+ travel. This has enhanced the city’s reputation as an inclusive and diverse destination, attracting a wide range of visitors. LGBTQ+ travelers, who often have higher spending power, contribute to the local economy by supporting hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Moreover, LGBTQ+ tourism boosts Benidorm’s international profile, establishing it as a progressive and vibrant city that celebrates diversity, ultimately leading to increased tourism and economic growth.
Around 200 people registered for this online event, which featured unique examples from IGLTA members and Affiliate members of the impact of LGBTQ+ tourism and travel: from its growing significance in the tourism industry to its economic, social, and cultural impact. The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, allowing participants to seek clarifications and ask questions.
